Our spelling tests are on Friday morning. The children receive their spelling words at the beginning of the year. Each Monday, they highlight and copy the week's words into their planner. I will check their words. If they have been written correctly, I will put a star on top of their list. Besides 2 practice pages, or in lieu of one of the pages, I might assign another spelling assignment such as sentences, spelling fractions, or scrambled words. These types of assignments are usually meant not only to practice correct spelling of the week's words, but also to reinforce another skill such as adjectives, fractions, or punctuation.
If we do not have school on Monday, your child will receive new words on Tuesday. If we have a scheduled day off on a Friday, our test will be on Thursday. If we do not have school 2 days in a week, the spelling test will be cancelled, however, if your child misses 2 days because of illness, he/she WILL be expected to take the test since the words are in the student planner.
Our spelling words are linked with our reading units. There will be usually 5 consecutive weeks of spelling tests and one week with no test. Then the cycle begins again.
Our spelling tests are as equally weighted as assignments. Spelling tests also include one dictated sentence as well as words. The spelling sentences usually contains at least two words with the spelling principle we studied that week even though they might be from our list. For example, let's say that we studied long a (ay, ai) that week. Even though the words we studied did not include the words gray and train, the sentence I dictate might be 'The gray train passed by on the tracks'. Train and gray contain this week's spelling principle. Usually, for each word incorrectly spelled or not written in the sentence 1 point is subtracted. Incorrect punctuation is minus one point. No punctuation at the end of capital letter at the beginning of the sentence is worth three points each. No more than 8 points can ever be subtracted for a sentence even though mistakes might equal more.
